The European Parliament Information Office in Malta, in collaboration with the Euro Media Forum and AEDE Malta is presenting the LUX Film Days 2014, with three films to be shown in Gozo at the Oratory Don Bosco, as part of the event.

Ida, a 2013 film by Pawel Pawlikowski, of Poland and Denmark, will be shown on Friday, the 12th of December, starting at 7.00pm. The Slovenian film – Class Enemy – A 2013 film by Rok Bicek, starting at 9.00pm, on Friday, the 12th of December. This will be followed on Sunday, the 14th of December, with a French film – Girlhood – a 2014 film by Celine Sciamma, starting at 8.30pm.

Plot Ida – Poland 1962 Anna is a novice, an orphan brought up by nuns in the convent. She has to see Wanda, the only living relative, before she takes her vows. Wanda tells Anna that Anna is Jewish. Both women start a journey not only to find their family tragic story, but who they really are and where they belong. They question their religions and ideas they believed in. Both are trying to go on living but only one of them can.

Plot Class Enemy – Relations between the students and the new teacher of German are extremely tense. When one female student commits suicide, her schoolmates blame the teacher for her death. An awareness that things are not quite so black and white comes too late… (based on true events).

Plot Girlhood – Oppressed by her family setting, dead-end school prospects and the boys law in the neighbourhood, Marieme starts a new life after meeting a group of 3 free-spirited girls. She changes her name, her dress code, and quits school to be accepted in the gang, hoping that this will be a way to freedom.

These are finalist films in the running for the European Parliament LUX Prize Competition 2014. This activity is being supported by the Ministry for Gozo.

The European Parliament’s LUX prize casts an annual spotlight on films that go to the heart of the European public debate. The Parliament believes that the cinema, a mass cultural medium, can be an ideal vehicle for debate and reflection on Europe and its future. Cinema is popular, attracts different generations and is affordable.
