Dun Gorg Mercieca honoured in literary evening held in Gozo

A literary evening was held on Friday at the premises of Circolo Gozitano in Savina Square, to honour Dun Gorg Mercieca, of Victoria, Gozo, who passed away on the 22nd of January this year,
The audience were able to listen to writers who knew Dun Gorg, share their experiences and thoughts on the poet. These included John Cremona, Joe W Psaila, Charles Bezzina, Joe Camilleri, Dr Alfred Grech, Anton F. Attard, Mario Borg and Capuchin Father Remig Galea.
Poetry was read by Matthew Sultana and Mario Borg. Ms Antoinette Grech will also read some poems by Dun Gorg who passed away at the age of 70 years. There was music and singing by Mro Antoine Mercieca and soprano Rosabelle Pavia.
Dun Gorg was ordained a priest in 1974 and was a member of the Salesian Congregation of Don Bosco He studied Theology with the Salesians in Catania. He passed his life teaching in Salesians schools in Sicily and Malta and then continued in Government schools in Gozo.
He became a member of the Cathedral parish clergy and every year, as the 15th of August approached, he used to write a special poem in honour of the heavenly Mother which he would then read during the carrying of the statue from its niche, he was known as the ‘Poet of the Assumption.’ Copies of these poems can be read on the parish annual L-Ghid tal-Assunta. Dun Gorg was also for many years Spiritual Director of the Leone Philharmonic Society.
His last book of verse to be published was L-Ghnja tac-Cinju in 2006.
