The Parliamentary Secretariat for the EU Presidency 2017 and EU Funds has announced that the European Commission has approved Malta’s National Programme Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) for the 2014-2020 financial period.

Following the necessary negotiations, this document has now been finalised and adopted by the European Commission allowing Malta to invest around €17,178,877 (75%) million under this National Programme.

The Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) 2014-2020 will further provide improvements in the capacity of the Office of the Commissioner for Refugees and continue to finance voluntary and forced return actions with which migrants are assisted to return back to their country of origin.

Cooperation with countries of origin to improve the return procedure as well as to attain the necessary documentation needed for the persons to travel back to their country will continue to be exercised. Moreover, integration measures for third-country nationals living in Malta will continue to be provided.

Other interventions in order to continue provide adequate accommodation, provision of food and medical care is also envisaged in this programme.

Parliamentary Secretary Dr Ian Borg said that €17,178,877 million obtained will therefore continue to build on the various actions which are currently being implemented under the current funds envisaged to be completed by June 2015.
