Pierre Mejlak, acclaimed Gozitan writer and winner of the European Union Prize for literature, will be giving a public talk, organised by Gozo Live. Pierre will be talking about his writing and will be happy to answer any questions from the audience.

Some of the stories from his new book, “Having Said Good Night” will be read out. It is also hoped that copies of the book will be available for purchase. This book is the English translation of ‘Dak li l-Lejl Ihallik Tghid,’ a Merlin Publishers publication and the winner of 2014 EU Prize for Literature.

The book is translated by Antoine Cassar and Clare Vassallo, and edited by Mary Ellen Kerans and Irwin Temkin.

The publishers said that within this captivating collection of stories, people are often at a crossroads, somewhere between a world they know and one they feel pulled towards.

“Torn between past and future, centre and periphery, real and imaginary, they move from one point in their existence to another, trying to understand a life they have lived but perhaps never fully comprehended.

“A woman is overjoyed at the news her husband has been found dead. A crow breaks into a young couple’s flat, smashing perceptions and assumptions, and a dying father sends his son on a journey to meet an old flame. A young boy builds friendships with burnt matchsticks and a widow makes her husband’s manuscript her own.”

Mejlak was born in Gozo in 1982, his first collection of short stories for adults, Qed Nistenniek Niezla max-Xita (I’m waiting for you to fall with the rain) was published to critical and popular acclaim in February 2009.

He was awarded the European Union Prize for Literature, which recognises the best new and emerging authors in Europe and the presentation of the awards took place during a gala ceremony at the Concert Noble in Brussels, by the European Commissioner for Education and Culture, Tibor Navracsics, in the presence of the Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government Owen Bonnici, members of the European Parliament and representatives of the Italian Presidency of the EU.

The talk is being held in the Ministry for Gozo Exhibition Hall, St Francis Square Victoria, on Tuesday, the 14th of April, and will get underway at 7.00pm.

Everyone is welcome to attend. The organisers advise that the audience arrive early to ensure getting a seat.
