Moviment Graffitti has thanked all those who voted No in the spring hunting referendum. “It positively notes that for the first time in decades almost half of the electorate voted against the stance of the two major political parties.”

In a statement the NGO said, “we take note of the referendum result. However, we feel that the campaign was neither just nor truthful, since the two major political parties, including the Prime Minster, have continued in their support of spring hunting even when the information provided was blatantly misleading.”

“The weight of such support cannot be overstated in a context where these political parties have massive control over media,political spaces and other resources,” it said.

Moviment Graffitti said that it is also concerned by efforts from the hunting lobby “to limit the right of the Maltese population to call an abrogative referendum. Such a move would only serve to limit the right of the people to decide on issues and further reinforce the supremacy of the political-parties in decision-making processes.”

“This referendum should serve as an eye opener to the 49%+ that voted to safeguard the animals and the environment – the two major political parties are only interested in power and definitely not in environmental protection, concluded Moviment Graffitti.
