Pre-retirement Courses commenced officially today at the University of Malta for persons aged over 55 years, in order to prepare for their retirement..
The course was launched by the Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing and Persons with Disability Dr Justyne Caruana, who said that such courses “are only made possible via the Department’s Active Ageing Unit, which was formed by this Government in order to implement the Government’s National Active Ageing Strategy.”
She explained that retirement is a transition from one phase of life to another and that the Parliamentary Secretariat for Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing acknowledges that a lot of people find it difficult to face this transition.
“In certain cases, retirement may be traumatic. While others, even though this is a liberation phase, may still need guidance on how to manage to live through this phase of life.”
Dr Justyne Caruana said that the Parliamentary Secretariat for Rights of Persons with Disability and Active ageing is committed to not to let anyone alone in such circumstances and the preparations for retirement are one of the main priorities of this Government.
Participants attending these courses will be offered new ways of social participation, will be shown possibilities on how to keep on giving their contribution to society, whilst being given information about physical and mental health, as well as social and financial aspects.
Dr Justyne Caruana reiterated that through the Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Malta and the Faculty of Social Wellbeing, the Government is offering training to 340 persons working in the elderly sector, and another 320 workers who work in the disability sector, which was made possible after the the Parliamentary Secretariat was awarded EU Funds.
