The Minister for Gozo, Dr Anton Refalo has announced that following the inauguration of the the Gozo Gozo Youth Council, and following a public call, Anthony Briffa has been appointed as the Gozo Youth Services Coordinator. Anthony was also a member of the Gozo University Group Executive, when he was a student at University.

Dr Refalo said that it is a priority of the Government to encourage young people to participate actively in society and have their voices heard.

“It was with this in mind therefore, that the Ministry for Gozo, through the establishment of the Youth Council, and now the appointment of the Gozo Youth Services Coordinator, has brought this to fruition, to really give a voice to young Gozitans to contribute to the development of Gozo. This through diverse areas such as education and training, employment and business, health, voluntary activities, social inclusion, creativity and culture, among others.”

From the beginning of this legislature, the Minister for Gozo said that he has met with different organisations to further understand the needs of the Gozitan people and students. The double insularity Gozo retains requires special treatment for its particular needs, he said.

While the Minister congratulated the GUG and KSU for work done on behalf of the students, he urged them to work hand in hand with Anthony as the Youth Services Coordinator to further more continuous contact between the Ministries and Unions.

The Minister also said that University students have benefitted from a Government grant which has provided new school lockers. These 16 lockers are for the use of Gozitan students. He visited the University to see the new lockers and meet students.

The Gozo Minister stressed that a substantial part of Government expenditure goes towards youth education. The investment of the lockers is not considered as a financial outlay, but as an investment aid for Gozitan students and to GUG, the association representing the students.

The Minister for Gozo concluded by saying that it strongly believes that young people should be around the table during consultations and therefore extended his appeal to more organisations and people to put their ideas forward each year, along with their involvement to stimulate the socio-economics of Gozo.
