Update: Anthony Debono, the husband of former Minister for Gozo Giovanna Debono appeared in the Gozo Court this afternoon, where he pleaded not guilty to charges in connection with the allegations of works for votes.

The charges against Debono included among others of the misappropriation of public funds, fraud, falsification of documents, abuse of power, committing a crime he was duty bound to prevent, making a false declaration and trying to prevent other people from giving information or evidence.

The prosecution did not object to bail and the Court granted Debono bail against a deposit of €1,000 as well as a personal guarantee of €5,000.

The allegations came to light earlier this year after a contractor, who turned whistleblower over alleged works carried out on private properties in Gozo.

Giovanna Debono arrived in the Gozo Court before the proceedings got underway.

Simon Busuttil – the Opposition Leader, in a press conference this afternoon, said that he had received a letter of resignation from the former Minister for Gozo Giovanna Debono.

She resigned from the PN Parliamentary Group, but would stay on as an Independent MP.

The Opposition Leader also announced that MP Chris Said would not be seeking reelection as the PN Secretary General, after he was requested by Dr Busuttil to help restore the Party’s trust in Gozo.
