The Gozo University Group has said in a statement that it is against any proposed change to the University bus route.
It said that yesterday, Censu Galea asked the Minister for Transport, Joe Mizzi, if it would be possible to have the X1 route pass through St. Paul’s Bay centre to cater also for the residents of that village.
GUG pointed out that the X1 route currently caters for Gozitan students who attend University, and also Gozitan residents who need to go to Mater Dei or the airport; while other buses that pass through St. Paul’s Bay centre are notorious for getting stuck and being delayed there.
For this reason, GUG said it urges both Minister Mizzi and Censu Galea, not to take, or push for any decision, that will be of detriment to Gozitan students, workers and residents. “It is important that a quick, express bus route is maintained throughout the day to the University and Mater Dei, given the lack of complete tertiary education and health services in Gozo.”
GUG stated that, “the only way this can be viable for Gozitan students, workers and residents is if a separate, quick, express route is created specifically to cater for University, Mater Dei and possibly Valletta also.”
“Gozitans already have to leave Gozo more than a couple of hours in advance if they need to be in Malta at a certain time, increasing the length of the most used bus route from Cirkewwa by Gozitans is thus incomprehensible,” concluded the Gozo University Group.
On our bus route -312- in Gozo the service times for 2 early morning buses seem to have been changed without any notice and the bus stops on the single direction part of the route changed to the other side of the road where currently no buses run. Most confusing for tourists who I have seen miss the bus because of it.
More importantly, have Malta Public Transport started delivering the new cards ready for next month. We applied on day 2 after the announcement and have not heard of anyone getting theirs yet.
