The Parliamentary Secretary for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Active Ageing, Justyne Caruana, has announced a programme of physical activity and sports for the elderly in Gozo.
The is being made possible following an agreement reached with Gozo Football Club, Kercem Ajax FC to start this pilot project.
It follows on from the project of intergenerational activity, announced last month, between the elderly and children to participate in Talent+ organised by Kercem Ajax FC.
Dr Caruana explained that this latest project is tailored and targeted towards seniors who want to be more active and enjoy a better quality of life.
The programme, led by foreign professionals specialised in this field, consists of sessions suitable for the elderly through physical activity, sports and information sessions on health and nutrition. The activities will take place in the new sports complex at Kercem, which also has a rehabilitation pool.
The project is fully funded by the Parliamentary Secretariat for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Active Ageing and therefore the sessions will be free to the public.
The Gozo programme will start from the 1st of August and continue until the end of December. Anyone wishing further information may call on 25903175. The application forms will be available from today, Monday, on www.activeageing.gov.mt.
Dr Caruana also announced that another pilot project in Malta will be announced shortly, a national project, which the Parliamentary Secretary said, “continues to implement another part of the Active Ageing Strategy adopted by this Government.”
She stressed that the Government is committed to carry out the National Strategy for Active Ageing and for this purpose the projects must be available in both Malta and Gozo. This is due to the fact that Gozo has an increasingly ageing population, Dr Caruana said.
Parliamentary Secretary Justyne Caruana concluded by thanking Kercem Ajax FC for their collaboration with this programme – the first of its kind in Gozo.
