75 children participate in 3 months of Summer SkolaSport Gozo

This year the Ministry for Gozo with the Gozo Sports Board, introduced the SkolaSport summer scheme, which began on the 15th of July and ends in the first week of September. This morning the Minister for Gozo, Dr Anton Refalo visited some of the activities taking place at the Gozo Sports Complex.
75 children aged between 5 and 12 years of age enrolled for the scheme, where they will not only spend the summer training in various sports, such as swimming, water polo, gymnastics and climbing, to name but a few, but also in the newly introduced classes of drama, art, cooking and crafts.
Children will have three half days a week, for three whole months, when they will remain active and at the same time training at young age in the art of agility, balance and coordination of the body. Together with the opportunity to develop their talents in various sports experiences, and have fun at the same time.
The Minister explained that several experienced coaches and instructors in the various disciplines of crafts, art and drama will be taking care of these children, “with special attention give to each and every one of them.”
Minister Refalo said that his dream as Minister is to see these children recognise their potential and join the various sports disciplines during the year. “Gozo is full of sporting associations under the umbrella of the Gozo Sports Board, that will help local society to be more active and participate in sports.” He reiterated how important it is that Gozitan children are active in both winter and in summer.
The Gozo Sports Board, Dr Refalo said, continues with its plans to encourage and introduce children to various sports in Gozo. Currently it is introducing school children to Badminton, gymnastics and basketball and is working towards opening a volleyball school.
The Chief Executive of the Gozo Sports Board, Alvin Grech said that all this was possible thanks to the Directorate within the Ministry under Joyce Farrugia, the Permanent secretary John Borg, Mark Cutajar on behalf of the Maltese Council for Sport and the Minister for Gozo, Dr Anton Refalo, who all, without hesitation gave the assistance that was requested.
He also mentioned the assistance of the Sports Club in Kercem, the Otters and the Gozo Sports Complex for use of their facilities.
