The island of Comino, always busy on hot summer days, attracted even more people than usual on Saturday, with a day of events and festivities held throughout the day, that went on well into the evening.

A day full of activities were organised by Din l-Art Helwa as part of their 50th anniversary activities, with the Santa Marija Tower Open Day.

Din l-Art Helwa volunteers were on site all day escorting visitors around the site, and providing information.

DLH also teamed up with the Historical Reenactment Group of Malta who were there all day dressed in period uniforms, and presented the public with a vivid experience of the 18th Century life and times of Tower Guards, both inside and outside the tower.

For the young history enthusiasts there were treasure hunts throughout the day with lots of prizes, organised by DLH.

This exciting day was then followed by the Festa ta’ Kemmuna – The traditional Comino feast dedicated to Saint Mary.

This was held after an absence of 40 years, organised by Silvio Buttigieg and his family who reside in Comino, with the collaboration of the Ghajnsielem Local Council and the Gozo Ministry. It proved to be such a success that the huge crowds of people who attended urged the organisers to make it an annual event.

Mass was celebrated at the small Chapel by the Bishop of Gozo Mario Grech, this was followed by Band Marches with the St Joseph Band and entertainment provided by Joe Demicoli. There was also a traditional presentation supper of roast pork. The evening concluded with a fireworks display.
