“The increase in the number of people employed is an encouraging trend for the economy. Also the engagement of new people in the public sector especially in those areas where mostly needed is positive. But there is a vacuum with regards job conditions,” stated Zminijietna – Voice of the Left.

In a statement today Zminijietna said that, “behind all these figures there are people who are facing precarious and abusive work conditions, low wages, and job insecurity.”

“Government should legislate new legislation against precarious jobs that clearly defines the difference between decent jobs and precarious jobs. Also the Government should be pro-active to introduce laws that reduce the amount of people engaged on a temporary work contracts as these jobs increase exploitation and destroy the meaning of work, collective bargaining and freedom of association.”

Zminijietna – Voice of the Left concluded by saying that “the Government should also target the abusive work conditions facing immigrants by setting up of an agency that facilitate work permits and address abusive conditions. Malta should also ratify the UN Convention on domestic workers, so to give domestic workers in Malta, mostly Philippinos the dignity for decent work conditions.”

From last Monday companies are now at risk of being blacklisted for precarious employment, as announced by the Ministry for Finance-
