The new Interpretation Centre at the Ggantija Temples and Heritage Park in Xaghra, Gozo, which opened its doors to the public in October 2013, has just been voted among the three finalists in the Best European Tourism Project category for the British Guild of Travel Writers Tourism Awards.

The other two entrants selected in the category are Caverne Du Pont D’arc, Ardèche, France and Maison Du Marais, (Marshland Discovery Centre), St Omer, France.

An audience of BGTW members earlier this month, voted on a score of projects that had been shortlisted for the 2015 Tourism Awards. Now there are just three contenders in each of the three categories featuring the best tourism projects in the UK, Europe and Wider World.

The 275 Guild members will now vote to decide the Winner and the two Highly Commended projects. The result will be announced at the Savoy Hotel, London, on Sunday, the 1st of November.

The new Ggantija project, led by Heritage Malta, consisted of the construction of a new interpretation centre and heritage park for the 5000-year-old megalithic temples of Ggantija, themselves a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1980.

The interpretation centre offers the visitor a glimpse into the Neolithic world on the small island of Gozo, presenting unique and priceless archaeological artefacts to the public.

The British Guild of Travel Writers Tourism Awards are given annually to projects that are not older than three years. They are proposed by members of the Guild who visit them in the course of their frequent travels.

The best of the projects put forward are shortlisted and then voted for. Ranking among the top six projects is considered a great achievement.
