Gozo College Rabat Primary was one of fourteen schools awarded support funding to implement sustainable consumption projects in their respective school communities. Nature Trust Malta launched We Eat Responsibly last June after securing funding for this EU project which brings together nine EU countries including Malta.
In a special ceremony held to mark World Food Day, Evarist Bartolo, Minister for Education and Employment handed over the funding to fourteen schools. GC Rabat Primary was the only school in Gozo to receive this funding and was awarded €500 to finance the project.
Drawing on the realities of their respective school communities the relevant stakeholders will seek to build a school programme that addresses the crucial issue of food purchasing and consumption. Through an action-oriented approach based on the tried and tested 7 steps Eco-School methodology, students will develop critical thinking, knowledge, skills and attitudes to become global citizens and challenge themselves to adopt new food behaviour patterns.
The latest WHO report, ranking Maltese people as the most obese in the EU, is definitely a cause for concern and a wake- up call to say the least. However the project's best bet is to seek another perspective to the erstwhile obvious realities linking health risks to a poor diet. It is in fact geared to make participants revisit the decisions they take daily related to food selection, provision and consumption and how these affect the health of the planet and the quality of life of its inhabitants.
Animal welfare, water conservation and quality, global warming, labour and trade issues, genetic modification of crops and livestock, alternative agricultural practices and food miles will be among the themes tackled through these fourteen projects.
The school projects will be finalised by the end of this scholastic year. A new call for other interested schools will be out by end of March 2016.
