Gozo Age Concern, a new NGO based in Nadur, are calling on the government to provide care homes for the elderly in Gozo.
The homes would also serve as respite and day centres, providing both for the emotional and caring needs of the elderly as well as family support.
Commenting on the appeal, Fr Mario Cassar, President of the Association said: “Currently there are no elderly care homes on the island, however in Malta there are fifteen such homes, including seven that are operated by the government, we think that this very unfair to the people of Gozo.”
At present, the Sant Anna wards of Gozo General Hospital, are also used as long term care units for the elderly, who although may be active, do not have the help and support at home or in some cases no home at all.
“We must as a matter of urgency, address the needs of the elderly in Gozo and ensure that whilst retaining their dignity, they receive the standards of care and the quality of life to which they are entitled,” Fr Cassar added
