Alternattiva Spokesperson on Social Issues, disability and sports, Dr Claire Azzopardi Lane has said that, “while it is now an acceptable fact of our society that jobs funded with public money are open to all EU citizens and to other citizens, when needed, it is totally unacceptable that Maltese nurses are treated in a different way from these new foreign recruits.”
She added, “it would seem that we are now reaching the absurd situation whereby a Maltese nurse with years of experience will earn fifty per cent of what a newly employed foreign nurse will earn. This would be sheer exploitation, with Maltese being utilised as cheap labour by the Maltese Government.”
“Alternattiva Demokratika denounces such exploitation and demands that the government puts its money where its mouth is. Therefore, equal pay for equal work is a must in a democratic and civil society. Discrimination is simply unacceptable,” concluded Dr Claire Azzopardi Lane.
