MEP Alfred Sant, told the Council of the 'Gozo University Group' (GUG) that Gozo could benefit from a strong EU digital economy.

Dr. Sant, who met the GUG Council in Victoria Gozo, referred to the EU's approach in the coming years to strengthen the digital economy within the EU and emphasised that if Gozo could benefit from this, its telecom connections with the rest of the world would become "state of the art."

"This would help a lot to diminish its double insularity and link it as effectively as Malta to the rest of the world. New enterprises, micro and larger, in the accountancy, financial services, gaming, data processing and related areas could then be set up easier."

The Maltese MEP indicated his office would be prepared to help GUG with lobbying for the cable to be set up, as well as to provide contacts and information regarding the EU's digital strategy and its implications for the Gozitan economy.

Dr. Sant and the GUG reviewed the results of the survey conducted by GUG which was launched in the seminar organised in October at The Hotel Ta' Cenc, by the office of the Maltese MEP, on Gozo's future.

In discussion among other topics, featured the problems of Gozitan young people studying in Malta and the lack of suitable jobs for them in Gozo when they finish their education.

The need for Gozo to benefit from the installation as soon as possible of a new, long promised fibre optic cable that would totally improve the island's access to the internet was emphasised. GUG were represented by Dennis Muscat, William Vella, Eman Borg, Loradini Pisani and Maria Dimech.
