In September 2008, the Retail Price Index went up by 0.96 per cent over the previous month, rising from 115.88 to 116.84. This primarily reflected an increase of 7.92 per cent in the Clothing and Footwear Index, mainly due to price increases in items of clothing.

The Food Index went up by 2.43 per cent, mainly on account of higher prices of fish, fruit and vegetables.

The Personal Care and Health Index registered an increase of 0.39 per cent, with increases in the prices of certain medicinal items being the main contributory factor.

The Beverages and Tobacco Index increased by 0.25 per cent, mainly due to higher prices of non-alcoholic beverages and served beverages.

The Household Equipment and House Maintenance Cost Index increased by 0.15 per cent, mainly underpinned by costlier household appliances.

The Transport and Communication Index registered a decrease of 1.09 per cent, which was mainly brought about by lower prices of air transport services.

The Recreation and Culture Index decreased by 0.33 per cent, mainly on account of price falls in audio- visual equipment.

The Housing Index decreased by 0.06 per cent due to lower prices of materials used in the construction industry.

In September the twelve-month moving average rate of inflation stood at 3.73 per cent, whereas the annual rate stood at 4.13 per cent.
