The Holy Father Pope Francis has appointed His Lordship Mgr.George Bugeja, 0.F.M., Titular Bishop of St. Leone, as Apostolic Administrator of the Vicariate of Benghazi.
Pope Francis has.accepted the resignation presented by His Lordship Mgr. Sylvester Carmel Magro, 0.F.M, from the pastoral care of the Apostolic Vicariate of Benghazi in Libya, in accordance with canon 401 § 1 of the Code of Canon Law.
The announcement was made public at midday today, Sunday, in Rome. Mgr. Magro acquires the title of Bishop Emeritus of the Apostolic Vicariate of Benghazi.
The Holy Father thanked the Bishop Emeritus for his self-less dedicated episcopal ministry which is well known and appreciated for its human warmth and its spiritual closeness to the People of God in Benghazi.
The new Apostolic Administrator, Mgr. George Bugeja, 0.F.M., was born on the 151 July 1962, in Xaghra, Diocese of Gozo. He entered the Novitiate of the Friars Minor on the ,nd October 1977, took his first vows on the 151 October 1978 and his solemn profession on the 28. August 1983.
He was ordained priest on the 5. July 1986. Beside his philosophical and theological studies, he holds a diploma in journalism and spirituality.
He started his priestly ministry in the diocese of Gozo. After a few years he was superior in various Franciscan communities.
He also held posts in his Order: Provincial Secretary for missions and evangelization and Secret, for formation.
He was parish priest in the parish of the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Sliema (2004-2008). Subsequently he was nominated auditor of the ecclesiastical Tribunal of the Diocese of Gozo and then from 2010 until 2014 an official within the Congregation of the Evangelization of Peoples. From January 2015 he was superior of the Convent of St. Anthony of Padova in Ghajnsielem, Diocese of Gozo. On 10° July 2015 he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Tripoli and received his Episcopal Ordination on 4. September 2015.
