Gozo Live and Gozo College have announced their collaboration on a project to promote reading in schools. This project ties in with the National Literacy Strategy for all in Malta and Gozo.

The Minister for Education and Employment Evarist Bartolo, has said that "more time is to be devoted to actual reading in both Maltese and English as part of the daily school timetable."

Working together with leading publishers in Malta, Gozo Live and Gozo College will organise sessions in schools where age appropriate books will be read to groups of students.

The volunteer readers will involve the students in the story being read and encourage them to become enthused about books. Students will be given the opportunity to buy books and to continue reading in their own time.

Video games, the internet, television and social media are just a few of the many claims on the time of students in addition to their lessons and extra curricula activities.

Books so often are sadly neglected but it is well known that students who read for pleasure often perform better at their school work and in their future studies.

Gozo Live is seeking readers who can assist with this project. Sessions will be scheduled to accommodate all concerned. Readers are needed in both English and Maltese.

The reading project will commence in April.
