An astronomy night is being organised at Dwejra in May, by The Institute of Space Sciences & Astronomy (ISSA) of the University of Malta, in collaboration with the Astronomical Society of Malta and Din l-Art Helwa.

They are inviting the general public to a night under starry skies at one of the few remaining dark sites on our islands: Dwejra in Gozo, on Saturday, the 28th of May.

Interested participants will be meeting at Dwejra Tower at 8pm for an overview of the night sky. Astrophysicists and amateur astronomers will be at hand to answer questions about astronomy by the general public.

As the skies darken and the stars start coming out, participants will train their telescopes on a variety of celestial objects, particularly the planet Mars which will be at its closest point to Earth (perigee) just a couple of days later. The organisers also intend to have a telescope set up to project live images of celestial objects.

Both adults and (especially!) children are welcome to this event! In the event of overcast skies or other unfavourable weather conditions, the organisers will have a line up of astronomy-themed documentaries and movies and, a cohort of astronomers on site whom you can question about anything space-related.

Space at the tower is limited, so the organisers do have to know numbers in advance. Acceptance will be on a first-come, first served basis.

Since this event is being held at Dwejra Tower, which is under the auspices of Din l-Art Helwa, it is suggested that a donation of €2 is kindly made to this organisation. This will be helping them to continue their sterling work in caring for important historical sites all over the Maltese islands.
