A new Nature Trust (Malta) publication, as part of the Archipelago Series, has just been launched focusing on the newly set up Majjistral Nature and History Park at Xaghra l-Hamra.

This publication gives an insight view of what one can find at this Park, through articles from various experts in the fields of natural history, cultural heritage, rural aspects etc.

This new publication covers aspects such as the formation and the setting up of the park, with articles from the three NGOs managing the Park today – Nature Trust (Malta), Din L-Art Helwa and Gaia Foundation. Furthermore, information on the flora of the area, the avifauna found in the park, the coastal and marine environment, the cultural heritage and the gobbled stone huts (Girna) found along the park, geomorphological processes, agricultural activities and nature walks, take the reader into a natural experience. This is also accompanied by magnificent pictures to give a vivid taste of the Park assets.

During the presentation of this book to the sponsors – the Malta National Commission for UNESCO, Nature Trust (Malta) Executive President Vincent Attard thanked UNESCO for their full trust and support in the work being carried out by the Ngo especially in environmental education, public awareness and natural and cultural heritage. Mr Attard said that NTM is proud to have such a distinct partner – the Malta National Commission for UNESCO in this publication, as this shows that its work is also appreciated by high profile bodies such as UNESCO.

The Park has already attracted various visitors who have come along on booked guided walks and experienced the natural heritage our islands enjoy. Mr. Attard concluded that this booklet will continue to raise public awareness among those who visit the area. He thanked UNESCO and all those who contributed in the publication.

Prof Charles Farrugia – Chairman of the Malta national Commission for UNESCO, congratulated Nature Trust (Malta) for their excellent publication. He said that as the national commission, they fully believed in such projects as this aided in widening public appreciation for the heritage of our islands. Prof Farrugia said that this booklet fulfils admirably UNESCO’s polices on environmental education and protection.
