The Minister for Gozo Anton Refalo and Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport Chris Agius, have officially inaugurated work on the Dun Karm Cassar ground at Ghajnsielem, with an investment of more than €250,000.

This ground has been extended, has new synthetic turf and has been surrounded with fencing, new artificial lighting has also been installed . The intensive programme of work has been ongoing for several years, with the inauguration coinciding exactly with the Ghajnsielem team's championship victory.

During a speech for the occasion the Gozo Minister said that the Ministry's priorities include improving sports facilities, to ensure that athletes have the best facilities both for training and for competitive sport.

"With an investment of more than a quarter of a million euro, this Ghajnsielem ground is a link in a chain of works to strengthen youth and sports sectors.," he said.

Dr Refalo added that the ground is now safe and accessible to everyone. He also said that he was convinced that the residents of the locality are the ones who will mainly benefit from this project. He appealed for careful use of the pitch to avoid any damage.

Parliamentary Secretary Chris Agius began by congratulating the Ghajnsielem club on their championship victory, while saying that the Government is doing its utmost to improve existing facilities, as well as building new ones.

"This is being done not only in football, but also various sports disciplines. The Government believes that both sport and physical activity leads to healthy living, so therefore it is investing wisely in this sector."

Chris Agius also stressed that each club must ensure that the facilities provided are taken care of and maintained properly for everyone to enjoy.

He highlighted the work being carried out on the White Paper for sports facilities to be marketed, in order that any association or sports club may become self-sufficient.
