Zminijietna – Voice of the Left said that it urges all progressive forces in Malta to support Caritas proposal for an increase in the minimum wage income. "To date, the General Workers Union, Alternattiva Demokratika, the Alliance against Poverty and the Communist Party of Malta have all expressed themselves in favour of this proposal."
Zminijietna added that it supports this proposal as this will benefit the hard working people on low income. "This increase will reduce income inequality, raise consumption of basic needs, and improve people's economic security and their standard of living."
"Studies show, that increases in the minimum wage have had little or no negative effect on the employment of minimum-wage workers, even during times of weakness in the labour market."
Zminijietna – Voice of the Left concluded by saying that the "same study suggests that a minimum-wage increase could have a small stimulative effect on the economy as low-wage workers spend their additional earnings, raising demand and job growth, and providing some help on the jobs front."
