"I have emailed the Malta Tourism Authority about banning smoking on Gozo beaches. The beaches are becoming like ashtrays, with cigarette waste thrown onto the sand making it very unpleasant for kids to play and for everyone trying to enjoy the beach.
I recently returned from from Los Angeles where smoking is banned, it was fantastic so clean.
The MTA said that they are very busy and they would put it on the agenda, but that it would take a long time for anything to happen and it would also have to go through the Government.
A smoking ban on beaches would be a major improvement to the island and the beaches would match the quality of the water."

Smokers ban on Gozo beaches and HONDOQ yes absolutely right, i second that motion.
Ban the car driving befor you have some idiotic idéers about stopp smoking . I now that some life on a dream i don t sorry but honestly
Are you seriously or a big egoist ?? Smoke in your own home is not a problem for others . Jens H. Gozo
Can we also ban children from our beaches? I find them very noisy and they run around while I am trying to sleep. They also build sand castles which affects the natural structure of the sand.
Can we also ban sunbeds and umbrellas? They take up far too much space.
And as for people… Ugh! I mean… have you seen the way they dress…?
Don’t be puerile. The writer is merely suggesting that smokers don’t throw away their cigarette butts on the beach – as people shouldn’t throw away any litter on the beach (or countryside or streets).
Totally misunderstood the point.
Carl is correct you have not understood the point.
No, Carl. The writer is not “merely suggesting” anything about cigarette butts. He is proposing a smoking ban.
If he were complaining about the litter in the countryside or streets (and the beaches), he would be one of many who complain about it, but whose voices are unheeded. The government doesn’t do anything about litter because the bulk of the population continues to discard its litter anywhere and everywhere.
Thanks Carl 100% correct.
So, Martin… when you say you wrote to the MTA “about banning smoking”, you were actually suggesting that they provided ashtrays.
That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for clearing it up.
why not employ beach combers Id love to do that people who actually clean the beach regularily seeing as many who visit the beaches are trashing them…but to ban is ridiculous
Well said Gina. There is too much “banning”, these days. Ban hatred, and ban banning.
Let’s just try to live with each other. We used to live, quite normally, in dense tobacco smoke; now we live in much less of it. Just try and live a little, and let other people live, with their failings and their addictions.
I bring my own ashtray. I respect the land too much to be that careless.
Well done lars shame all smokers are not as considerate
I now that s smokers have a big problem “they don t can stop” but don t poisen other peoples .
Smoking is not the problem its the people who only think about themselves. There is so many other things like pick after you dog, don’t blast music on the boat or on land, BBQs at night that leave a truck of trash on the floor and the list goes on.
Smoking waste is disgusting lots of smokers just discard waste on the beach not thinking its a problem.I agree there are lots of others problems dumping litter /rubbish seems to be a major problem in many places.I think there is a culture in gozo of thinking someone else can clear my rubbish up as long as I can’t see it!
Impose big fines for littering be it on beaches or indeed anywhere. It would reduce the problem dramatically. Litter is litter (including cigarette waste)!
