Gozo Age Concern, are asking for the elderly in Gozo to be remembered this week, while the world mourns for those who died in battle, over the last 94 years.

The organisation, based in Nadur, point out that most people over the age the age of 75 have memories and first hand experience of the blitz of Malta and Gozo during World War II, they may also have lost parents and relatives during the conflict, either from the bombing or from active service.

Gozo Age Concern therefore repeat their call to the government, to open care homes in Gozo, so that the elderly, who are not cared for in their own home, are looked after in their autumn years with as much care and support as possible.

Commenting on the appeal, Fr Mario Cassar, President of the Association said: “The elderly in Gozo survived the horrors of the second world war, it is therefore imperative that we ensure they do not go through more horror in their old age.”

Contrary to the statement recently made by Miriam Muscat, Communications Coordinator at the Ministry of Gozo, there are no dedicated care homes in Gozo, unlike Malta where there are 15.

“We owe a debt to the people who made so many sacrifices during the last war” it is now time to honour that debt,” Fr Cassar added.
