The Parliamentary Secretary for the Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing Justyne Caruana, has announced an extension project for Dar Padova in Ghajnsielem.

She said that it will provide more space at the Day Centre which provides services for people suffering dementia. Also enhancing the services for the Gozo community, for the elderly and for their families.

The Centre, which is the first of its kind in Gozo, opens daily including weekends for persons suffering from dementia. They have the opportunity to take part in organised activities and are taken care of by trained staff in a suitable and safe environment.

Dr Caruana explained that following the opening of the Centre last year, the demand for the service has increased, meaning that it has now reached its maximum capacity, therefore it was decided to extend the space, which will now be doubled.

The works on the extension project will get underway immediately and are expected to be completed within a few weeks.

Dr Caruana described this initiative as part of a series of projects that the Parliamentary Secretariat is implementing to strengthen and augment the services offered to the elderly on a national basis and to implement its National Dementia Strategy.
