Staying Active During Our lives – Programme for the elderly in Gozo

The Parliamentary Secretary for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Active Ageing Justyne Caruana attended the final day of the "Staying Active During Our life" course which took place at the Active Ageing Centre at Xewkija.

Dr Caruana presented certificates to the 50 participants in this programme.

The programme was launched by the Active Ageing Section with the collaboration of Allied Health Care Services, within the Active Ageing and Community Care Directorate.

Through this activity the elderly are encouraged to stay active promoting better health and helps to prevent falls.

The programme consisted of six sessions, with talks by different professionals from the health care sector, including physiotherapy, an occupational therapist, podiatrist, consultants in geriatrics and a Nutritionist.

The physiotherapist implemented appropriate physical exercise programmes according to the participants abilities to exercise, which were intended to strengthen muscles and improve balance.

During her visit Dr Caruana thanked the Active Ageing section and all the professionals who contributed during this programme. She also thanked all the elderly who participated in the programme and encouraged them to follow the tips learned, as well as to continue to live active and independent lives while avoiding falls.
