The Office of the Commissioner for Children is inviting the public for a discussion on Work, which will focus on the recommendations made in the Manifesto for Children. The Manifesto for Children was launched earlier this year, in order to increase awareness of matters requiring urgent attention with regards to children in Malta and Gozo. The participants in this discussion will be given the opportunity to voice their opinion and concerns, and make their own recommendations in this field.
The Manifesto for Children outlines various improvements to be made within the field of work. Child labour is a persistent problem which is often linked to absenteeism in schools, and there is a need for increased efforts in order for children’s rights not to be violated in this manner. Furthermore, the transition from a school education to the field of employment is one which is very challenging for a significant number of young people. The integration of youth into the work environment is met with a few obstacles which need to be alleviated, in order for young people to be able to contribute towards Maltese economy and society to their fullest potential.
The Manager of Research and Policy, Ms. Sharon Attard, will make a brief 15 minute presentation on the topic as presented in the Manifesto for Children. Thereafter, the chairperson will open up the floor for comments and recommendations from those present. Recommendations will eventually be drawn up in a report and presented to the relevant authorities in order to encourage their implementation.
The discussion will be held on Wednesday 26th November 2008 between 17.30 – 19.30pm at the Office of the Commissioner for Children, 469 St. Joseph High Road, Santa Venera. The Office encourages you to attend, share your thoughts, and make your contributions to the discussion. The discussion is open to all, including professionals in the field, members of the public, parents and children. Kindly confirm your attendance for the discussion by calling 21485180 during office hours, or via email on sharon.a.attard@gov.mt
