Festival of Lights in honour of Saint Lucy in Santa Lucija, Gozo

The annual, traditional, ‘Festival of Light,’ is being organised by the Fondazzjoni Ta Klula of Santa Lucija, Gozo, on Saturday, the 10th of December.
The Festival is in honour of the village Patron Saint, Saint Lucy and local girls will parade in the square dressed in long white gowns and a red sash, wearing a crown of lit candles on their heads. They then go in procession to the church.
Santa Lucija buns are distributed to all those present and a brass band participates in the celebrations. A large fire will be lit in the village square. Saint Lucy, is associated with lengthening days and more sunlight, the protector of light.
The Festa proper will take place on Tuesday, the 13th of December, when a large variety of celebrations take place inside the beautiful little Church and also around the streets of this very quaint Gozitan village, including a fireworks display.
The hamlet feast on Sunday the 11th of December, will feature band marches, and religious celebrations, which will include a procession with the Titular statue from the Church Square through the streets of the village in the evening..
After the Festa celebrations finally draw to a close, a large Crib is set up in an old mill room in readiness for the Christmas Celebrations.
Saturday evening’s celebrations get underway at 6.30pm.
