Heritage Malta has just launched Hands on Deck, a learning programme for school children visiting the Malta Maritime Museum in Vittoriosa.

Hands on Deck is one of the many projects that formed part of an EU Funded project which aims to explore, through history and archaeology, the structures and systems of exchange of the Mediterranean’s cultural heritage pertaining to sea and land commercial transportation networks in the north and south shores of the Mediterranean Basin. The project seeks to valorize these aspects through innovative methods.

The ‘Hands on Deck’ workbook for primary school children complements MERCATOR Educational by focusing on the Maltese Islands’ merchants’ history during the period of the Knights of St John. Another educational component of MERCATOR consists of an interactive game on CD also focusing on the merchants’ history in the Mediterranean. The CD is aimed at secondary school students. Both the workbook and the CD are distributed free of charge to students during organised school visits.

During the official launch students from the Marsascala Primary School were addressed by Dr Luciano Mule’ Stagno Chief Executive of Heritage Malta and then took part in the programme by carrying out the creative exercises found in the colourful workbook which will be used during this exciting programme.

The Hands on Deck programme follows other learning programmes which are already running in various Heritage Malta sites and museums namely the Palace Armoury, Tarxien Temples, Inquisitor’s Palace, G?ar Dalam, the National Museum of Fine Arts and the National Museum of Natural History.
