The Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) has been suspended from the Confederation of Malta Trade Unions (CMTU) with immediate effect.

The confederation said it had taken its decision because the MUT had not only not stopped its “unfair and unfounded” attacks on the confederation’s leadership but it had also “tried to cast a bad light on the officials of the other affiliated unions.”

The CMTU said that it would be informing the local and international public as to who will take over the representative posts vacated by the union’s suspension.

The CMTU also said that it had also been unanamously decided that no union affiliated with the confederation is to attend the meeting called by the MUT, to discuss the formation of a Maltese Trade Union Council.

The Confederation concluded by saying that it could not have confidence in John Bencini, president of the MUT, who was appealing for unity among trade unions, when both he and his union had continued their attacks on the CMTU.
