According to data from the National Statistics Office today 8 cinema establishments were open to the public during 2016, of which 2 were located in Gozo and 6 in Malta They projected 391 different film titles and registered a total of 673,487 admissions, a drop of 4.4% on the previous year.

Altogether, these 8 cinemas had a total of 35 screens and a seating capacity of 6,771. 26 out of 35 cinema theatres were accessible to persons with disabilities.

503,975 cinema-goers or 74.8 per cent watched films originating from the United States, while 144,638 cinema-goers or 21.5 per cent watched a film originating from an EU-member country.

The NSO said that Maltese productions accounted for 11,036 admissions, equivalent to 1.6 per cent of the total. It noted that on average, Maltese production were screened for a relatively longer duration than foreign films.

The 3 most popular movies last year were ‘Finding Dory,’ ‘Deadpool’ and ‘The Secret Life of Pets.’ The NSO said that these 3 films attracted 4.2, 3.2, and 3.1 per cent of cinema-goers in 2016, respectively

An average of 187 persons were employed by cinemas in 2016, of which 84.0 per cent were engaged on a part-time basis, the NSO said.
