The first phase of consolidation works on the Gozo aqueduct structures, was launched today by the Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana.
The first phase of works, the consolidation of the vulnerable parts of the aqueducts, are planned to be completed in August.
Dr Caruana announced that all the work will be carried out by Ministry for Gozo staff and all costs will be covered by the Ministry.
The Minister explained that this work is important for several reasons. First and foremost to preserve the nation’s heritage, and as the aqueduct is a Gozo icon, so the first phase of the works are urgently needed to ensure that it is not lost.
The team of workers from the Ministry are using special techniques due to the delicate process of the restoration, Dr Caruana said
The Minister thanked the workers, architects and all those involved in the highly skilled, meticulous work.
Built in the 1880s by the British to transport water to Victoria, the aqueduct runs from Ghar Ilma cave in Santa Lucija to Victoria and water was stored in a reservoir within the Cittadella ditch.
