The number of vehicles on the road continues to rise in Malta and Gozo. The stock of licensed vehicles increased at an average rate of 43 per day during the second quarter of this year, the National Statistics Office has said.

It went on to say that administrative data obtained from Transport Malta indicates that, at the end of June this year, the stock of licensed motor vehicles stood at 365,483. This was up by 1.1 per cent on the previous quarter

Passenger cars made up 78.6 per cent of the total stock, 13.5 per cent commercial vehicles, 6.7 per cent motorcycles/quadricycles and ATV’s, while buses and minibuses accounted for less than one per cent.

The NSO said that new licences issued during the period under review amounted to 6,448. The majority of new licences (4,751 or 73.7 per cent of the total) were issued to passenger cars, followed by motorcycles with 886.

It also noted that newly-licensed ‘new’ motor vehicles amounted to 3,132, or 48.6 per cent of the total, and newly licensed ‘used’ motor vehicles totalled 3,316. An average of 71 vehicles per day were newly licensed during the quarter under review.
