An observation night event to view the partial lunar eclipse, visible from Malta during moonrise on the 7th of August, is being organised by the University of Malta’s Institute of Space Sciences and Astronomy, in collaboration with the Astronomical Society of Malta.

Members of the Institute and of the Astronomical Society will be present on site at Ahrax tal- Mellieha, close to the Immaculate Conception Chapel to guide all those attending.

Telescopes will be set up to use, however the partial eclipse itself, for which the maximum will be at 8.20pm local time, is easily visible with the naked eye, the organisers said.

Later on in the night, there will also be the opportunity to observe the planets Jupiter and Saturn as well as some nebulae and star clusters.

Lecturers and students from the Institute will be present on site to speak to prospective students about their research areas within the Institute.

Amateur astronomers from within the Astronomical Society will also be available to assist members of the public interested in starting out in amateur astronomy.
