Safety at sea – is the one aim of Transport Malta officers patrolling local waters. Thousands of boat owners, their families and friends, enjoy the sea with their vessel and Transport Malta said that its officers work hard to make it a safer place for them and for swimmers.

“The Maltese Laws have a section dedicated to small ships, laws that are meant to provide a safe environment for all, to enjoy, or work in. TM officers patrol the seas and guide boat operators in following the rules for their and other’s safety,” it said.

The Laws, for example, establish speed limits but, Transport Malts said that unfortunately, its officers frequently have to stop operators from driving at high speeds close to shore. “Over speeding, besides being illegal, is dangerous for swimmers, divers and boat users,” it added.

Transport Malta warned that “boat owners must ensure that their boat is in order, is correctly registered, shows the right markings and is properly insured. Needless to say, no berthing or manoeuvring is permitted in prohibited areas and no mooring with swimmer zones or navigational aids.”

Any irregularities should be advised on 119 and inform the Police, Transport Malta said.
