Zminijietna – Voice of the Left, has said in a statement that it supports the position taken by the Government in embarking on a social housing policy.

“The Policy includes the development of various housing estate projects in different parts of Malta, in areas within the development zone.”

“The Government should keep under state control all of these properties and not sell them for gain. These properties should be rented, with the aim to assist those in need, ” stated.Zminijietna.

On the issue of rents, Zminijietna said that it is “against the Malta Developers Association, who want the system to remain as it is, based on speculation.”

Zminijietna added that, “many families are finding it difficult to keep on paying their rent, even if they are given subsidies by the government.”

Zminijietna concluded by appealing for “a state regularisation of the rental market so as to target speculation in prices and abuses. Also, a tax on vacant property should be considered.”
