Wider public consultation needed on waste management - Zminijietna Left think-tank organisation Zminijietna, has voiced its concern over what it describes as, “the precarious situation with regards to Malta’s waste management system.”

Zminijietna pointed out that national statistics show that only 20% from all the waste generated is being recycled.

“A proper and wider public consultation process should take place before any decision is taken.” Zminijietna added that, “this should include the general public, non-governmental organisations, local councils, farmers, trade-unions and representatives of the business community.”

“The idea to move forward for incineration means that the three pillars for a sustainable waste management system, that is to reduce, re-use and finally recycle waste will be a shambles,” stated Zminijietna – Voice of the Left.

It went on to say that, “as such, the Government should introduce measures that incentivise recycling, while penalising those that do not recycle.”
