Waste carriersSome 720 vehicles and vessels that transport waste have submitted their registration for a license from the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA), in order to keep carrying out their activity in the coming year. The authority has extended the deadline for waste carriers to regularise their position until the 16th of January 2009.

The authority, last June had announced that it would be registering any vehicle that carries waste within the Maltese Islands by the end of this year. The aim of this registration system is to ensure that all vehicles/vessels that are carrying wastes are up to standard and that no waste escapes into the environment. These registrations also ensure that the waste carriers complies with the Waste Management (Activity Registration) Regulations as published by Legal Notice 106 of 2007 which came into force on the 10th of August 2007

Registered waste carriers are being issued with a registration tag that should be affixed on the wind screen of the vehicle or vessel. Any waste carries caught after this date will be subject to legal action which may even include the confiscation of the Vehicle/vessel. Moreover, only registered waste carriers will be allowed to enter authorised waste management facilities.

Registration is renewable annually upon application with MEPA and applicant is to provide 3 photos of the carrier (side, front and rear), copy of logbook, copy of ADT license disc (or copy of renewed insurance) certificate from ADT or MMA depending on the class of waste carrier.
