Gozo Summer Carnival, rock and jazz concerts and Exile Voices

Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana, has said that the Ministry for Gozo is “investing substantially in Gozo to promote it as a distinct and unique destination.”

Dr Caruana was speaking during the launch of a number of activities which are to be held at the end of the month in Mgarr Harbour.

This programme will include Rock Legends, Jazz Do, and for the first time a Gozo Summer Carnival, all arranged following discussions with the business community and which will be giving the area the importance it deserves, said the Minister.

The Cultural Council within the Ministry for Gozo, with the full collaboration of the Arts Council Malta, have organised the varied programme.

Dr Caruana thanked all those who have contributed to the activities and urged the public to attend the events “in one of the island’s most beautiful settings .”

Chairman of the National and Regional Celebrations Committee Gozo, Mgr. Dr Joe Vella Gauci, said that the Gozo Summer Carnival will include both Gozitan and Maltese Carnival Associations, with 10 carnival floats, six dance companies and three local bands, plus much more. The Gozo Summer Carnival will be on Saturday, the 1st of September at Mgarr Harbour.

Annabelle Stivala, Festivals Director of Arts Council Malta, explained that in collaboration with the Malta International Arts Festival, a photographic exhibition – Exile Voices- by Reza – a renowned National Geographic photographer, will be held in the main courtyard of the Ministry for Gozo, which she said, “will highlight the experiences and difficulties experienced by illegal immigrants.”

Contributions to the exhibition will also be made by Maltese photographers Darren Zammit Lupi and Charles Mifsud and will remain open to the public until Sunday, the 2nd of September.

She also talked about the programme for Mgarr Harbour, with Rock Legends – a concert of rock music, on Thursday the 30th of August, with a number of local artists performing a repertoire of classic rock music. Then on Friday, the 31st it will be the fifth edition of a ‘Jazz Do with the participation of Charles City Gatt, George Curmi ‘The Pusè and other international artists.

Entrance to all the events are free of charge.
