The Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency (MIEMA) joined the 14th edition of EUSEW 2019, EU Sustainable Energy Week, which was held earlier this month in Brussels.

The event brought together public authorities, private companies, NGOs and consumers to promote initiatives to save energy and move towards renewables for clean, secure and efficient power. This year’s topic for EUSEW was – Shaping Europe’s Energy Future.

MIEMA, as a partner of the Interreg MED projects LOCAL4GREEN and PEGASUS, attended the Policy Conference which covered several topics including energy grid, storage and innovative mobility solutions.

Pilots actions as part of these two project are being implemented in Gozo, together with Regjun Ghawdex, the Ministry for Gozo and the Local Council of San Lawrenz.

The Agency said that it also participated in debates regarding multilevel actions addressed towards energy poverty and to local authorities as drivers to mitigate climate change.

Lessons learnt through the conference will be transferred on a local level through the Agency’s activities, it said, which revolve around “supporting an economy built on clean, secure and efficient energy solutions.”

EUSEW19 also served as an opportunity for MIEMA to promote, together with other project partners, LOCAL4GREEN and PEGASUS projects in the Networking Village and Energy Fair.

Both the projects hosted an interactive stand with the aim to provide to participants and stakeholders the opportunity to exchange ideas on policies and best practices resulting from other projects and to foster new connections to promote energy innovation.

Both PEGASUS and LOCAL4GREEN projects set up stands at EUSEW to promote the results achieved through pilot actions implemented in the different partner regions.

The PEGASUS project stand allowed visitors to understand how micro-grids operate in practice, the benefits they may bring to a local energy community as well as the commercial viability of this new technology.

The LOCAL4GREEN stand, hosted by MIEMA and MUSOL Foundation from Valencia, shared the fiscal policies designed under the project with different EU local authorities, companies and organisations.

MIEMA also attended also the “Renewable Energy Community EUSEW Side Event” organised by the GREENCAP project and the Interreg MED Programme at the Climate Alliance premises, in Brussels.

The Agency said that this meeting focused on an overview about how to support energy transition in rural and islands areas based on regional consultations across the Mediterranean.

“It was an important opportunity to dialogue with high level experts about the future of the renewable energy and to share the outcomes of LOCAL4GREEN and PEGASUS projects with the participants,” it said.

This coming Monday and Tuesday, MIEMA will also be hosting the 5th PEGASUS Steering Technical Committee meeting, which is taking place at the Citadel in Victoria, Gozo.

MIEMA explained that the two-day event will serve to highlight the project results achieved through the simulations of functioning micro-grids in 7 pilot MED areas, including the pilot at San Lawrenz in Gozo.
