Colombian man sentenced to 5-years in jail for Xaghra mugging

Police in a statement today said that, a 29-year old man born in Colombia has been arraigned in the Gozo court before Magistrate Dr P Coppini LL.D, charged with having committed aggravated theft of jewellery, caused grievous injuries to a 55-year-old British woman and slight injuries to a 58-year-old British man.
The man was also accused among others, with committing a crime during a period of conditional discharge issued by the Gozo Law Courts.
The accused admitted to the charges brought against him and was sentenced to 5 years in jail. The prosecution in this case was led by Inspector B. C. Spiteri.
Following inquiries, the Gozo Police had arrested the Colombian on Monday in connection with a mugging which took place in Triq il-Bullara, Xaghra, Gozo at about 4am.
During the incident, two British people were assaulted with a stone and robbed of their jewellery.
Both of them had to be taken to the Gozo General Hospital to be treated for the injuries they had suffered.
