Data released today from the National Statistics Office on the labour supply, show that commuter workers were predominantly Gozo residents working in Malta, accounting to 3,662 during 2018,  up slightly from 3,410 recorded in the last data released in 2018.

The NSO noted that this implied that approximately one out of every five employed persons resident in Gozo worked in the Malta region and 50.1% were females.

It explained that the labour supply is composed of persons in employment and those registering for work. To examine regional labour supply in Malta, employment statistics are being presented under two different variants; by place of residence and place of work, respectively

The statistical information on Gozo is shown below.

Gozo had the highest proportion of employed persons in the wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; transportation and storage; accommodation and food services activities, amounting to 28.4%.

The number of Gozo residents with a full-time job in 2018 totalled 14,279, reflecting an increase of 7.55 when compared to 2017, the NSO said. The private sector accounted to 60.6% of the total.

The largest share of Gozo residents with a full-time job in the public sector was in the public administration and defence; compulsory social security; education; human health and social work activities, amounting to 78.2% of total public sector.

On the other hand, the largest proportion of full-time employed Gozo residents in the private sector worked in the wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; transportation and storage; accommodation and food services activities, accounting to 33.2% of total private sector.

In addition, the NSO said that both the males and females who were Gozo residents and worked full-time were predominantly employed in the public administration and defence; compulsory social security; education; human health and social work activities

In 2018, full-time employment in Gozo amounted to 10,875, an increase of 7.3% when compared to 2017.

Full-time employment in the private sector accounted for 64.4% of the total and the males who worked in this sector accounted for 41.5% of total full-time employment in Gozo.

The NSO added that the largest share of full-time employment was in in the wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; transportation and storage; accommodation and food services activities at 36.8%

In the public sector, the share of public administration and defence; compulsory and social security; education; human health and social work activities accounted to 72.4%.

Full-time males in the Gozo were predominantly employed in the wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; transportation and storage; accommodation and food services activities, while the females were mainly employed in the public administration and defence; compulsory social security; education; human health and social work activities, the NSO said.

Gozo residents in 2018 employed on a full-time basis in Malta totalled 3,309, of which, 50.2% worked in the public sector and the remaining worked in the private sector.

The males who worked in the private sector accounted for 31.0% of the total full-time employment of Gozo residents in Malta, while the females who worked in the public sector accounted for 30.6% of the total.

92.9%of those during the same year who were working within the public sector worked in the public administration and defence; compulsory social security; education; human health and social work activities, while 26.9%of those in the private sector worked in the professional, scientific and technical activities; administrative and support service activities.

In addition, the NSO said that both the full-time males and females who were Gozo residents and worked in Malta region were predominantly employed in the public administration and defence; compulsory social security; education; human health and social work activities.

The NSO said that the percentage distribution of the part-time employment differed throughout all economic activities.

In 2018, total part-time employment of Gozo residents amounted to 4,962 of which, 50.9% were part-time secondary employment and the remaining were part-time primary.

The NSO data shows that the largest share of part-time employment of Gozo residents was registered in wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; transportation and storage; accommodation and food services activities, contributing to 35.9% of the total. This featured in both part-time primary and secondary.
