The motion regarding the setting up of a Parliamentary Committee for Climate Change placed by MPs Jason Azzopardi, David Agius, Robert Cutajar and Frederick Azzopardi, has been welcomed by Nature Trust – FEE Malta.

NTM in a statement said, “Climate Change is becoming an international Crisis. Today International bodies like the United Nations and the European Union are urging nations to go for actions rather than targets on paper.”

“What was thought to still have some years to go, scientists are now showing how this crisis is at our doors having an impact on our generation and the ones that follow,” the NGO said.

It added that, “way back in the 1980s, Malta was the first of all nations to highlight the Climate change issue at the UN level.”

NTM argued that, “despite being the champion at that time, we have fallen well behind in the years that followed. Today it is just another word our politicians use when they mention targets and stop short of actions.”

It highlighted the fact that many countries are setting up ambitious targets and implementing them. “This is not because they want to look good but it is an urgent need they realise for human survival on this planet. Already many biodiversity species have been lost in the process.”

Nature Trust – FEE Malta urged MPs to support this motion and set up the committee without any delay.

The NGO said that it is prepared to support any positive actions put in place by the committee for the common good of |Malta and all the planet. “After all even our children through the EkoSkola programme keep highlighting this issue each year at Parliament.”

Nature Trust – FEE Malta concluded by saying, “now is the time to act. Our Children are already calling as they fear their future. We should be the ones to act for them.”
