When Abi and Emma opened the doors of Bejta Artisan in October 2014 – as a small gallery housed in an old stable in the narrow streets of Victoria, Gozo, never did they imagine that 5 years on their micro business would still be running, never mind the success it is today.
The Bejta Artisan gallery houses the work of around 20 artists and crafters who are all residents of Gozo.
During the last 5 years Abi and Emma have taken part in various National and International art projects including – Swarm The World Migration for Tasha Lewis, a New York based artist, Mediterranean Peace Donkeys for Caravan, an international peace building non-profit/NGO, various projects with Arts Council Malta and even providing art direction for a local film – Dar Ir-Rumien, very proudly winning an award for best Art Direction in a short film.
The gallery is a busy space not only housing Abi and Emma’s studio, but also hosting weekly craft classes for children and workshops for adults.
It is also the venue for a popular `Knit and Natter’ group every week on a Tuesday and this group of ladies now make the gallery’s `Morsbags,’ an international eco-bagging scheme, which uses recycled fabrics to make bags which are given away free with all purchases, making the gallery completely plastic free.
Abi and Emma explained that over the last five years the Gallery’s philosophy and aims haven’t changed – “the gallery has to be self supporting, hosting only art made in Gozo which is environmentally sympathetic and affordable and giving opportunities for people to learn and express themselves artistically.”
