Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party is asking the Electoral Commission to cater for the needs of Maltese citizens who are abroad during the electoral period.

Arnold Cassola, Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, said, “Alternattiva Demokratika had already brought up the issue of the over hundred Maltese athletes who will be competing in Cyprus at the Small Nations’ Games on the 6th of June. We hope that appropriate arrangements have been made for these athletes to vote before leaving Malta.”

Stephen Cachia, Alternattiva Demokratika Deputy Chairperson and Spokesperson on Democracy, added, “Another category of voters that is hit by particular circumstances is the large Maltese community working at the European institutions in Brussels and Luxembourg. These people are only given one day leave for voting purposes and would therefore arrive in Malta too late to collect their voting document.”

“Alternattiva Demokratika suggests that these people, and others working where there is a sizeable Maltese workforce, such as the UK or the UAE, could collect their voting documents at their respective Embassies. An alternative would be for the electoral office in Malta to remain open till late on Friday night, the 5th of June, in order to allow citizens to collect their voting document,” concluded Stephen Cachia.
