Central Bank of Malta is holding its next public lecture on Friday – Blasphemous rumours? From school to industry in post-colonial Malta.

The lecture will be delivered by Dr Joseph Gravina Senior Lecturer II at the University of Malta employed within the Systems of Knowledge Department at the Junior College.

His research interests focus on the comparative study of industrialisation, social reproduction and education.

Industrial development in post-colonial Malta required “workfarist” human resource policies. Trade schools, among others, provided productivity-raising training.

Projecting a specific class identity, those for girls were socially conservative. Then, socialist policy kick-started “welfarist” comprehensive schooling.

Dr Gravina said that, “Government change in 1987 led to human resource jargon change but “workfarism” continued (and continues) to thrive.”

The lecture is this Friday, the 25th of October, starting at 3pm, at Central Bank of Malta, Binja Laparelli, Valletta. Entrance is from Triton Square or Vjal Girolamo Cassa
