KNZ’s Vice President Adrian Dominic Ellul and KNZ’s Policy and Youth Rights Commissioner Sandrine Borg, have this morning presented the Council’s research findings, which was carried out in conjunction with Agenzija Zghazagh, about young people’s views on the use of Cannabis.
Findings show that although there is no clear majority as to whether youths agree with the legalisation of recreational cannabis use, they showed strong opinions on limiting factors with regards to this matter.
KNZ said that the tesearch has shown that; youths prefer to be informed about this matter via the Internet and medical experts, that youths are strongly against the practice of home growing and would prefer this to be cultivated by professionals.
Those who took part in the study have also shown their opinions on restricting the use of cannabis both by age and place of usage.
The study was conducted by an independent, Maltese statistical analysis company, which interviewed youths between the ages of 16 and 35 across Gozo and Malta.
KNZ has recommended that should the recreational use of Cannabis be legalised, then, “consumption of cannabis should be restricted to designated public areas, on private property and in the presence of individuals who are of the proposed age.
“There should also be an age restriction of no younger than 21,” KNZ said. It added that, The Maltese Authorities should set up an app or website with relevant and correct information on the consumption of cannabis.
Another recommendation by KNZ is that “the Health Ministry should provide the correct information to medical professionals, whilst training them in imparting the correct information to individuals who wish to consume cannabis on a recreational basis.”
KNZ concluded by saying that the sale of cannabis should take place through specially licensed private providers and cultivation of cannabis plants on a personal basis should be restricted
